How to Tell If Your Boiler Is Condensing or
Non-Condensing?

Knowing whether your boiler is condensing or non-condensing is important to qualify for funding under the ECO4 scheme.

Under ECO4, only non-condensing boilers are eligible for free replacement, as they are considered inefficient by today’s standards.

Here’s how to check:

Check for a Condensate Pipe

A condensing boiler produces condensation. If your boiler has a white plastic pipe underneath (similar to a sink waste pipe),

it’s likely condensing.

Non-condensing boilers won’t have this.

Look at the Flue

Check the flue (the pipe that releases gases outside your home):

  • Metal flue? Likely a non-condensing boiler.

  • White or black plastic flue? Most likely a condensing model.

Check the Installation Year

Boilers fitted after April 2005 are usually condensing, as regulations changed to

require higher efficiency.

If your boiler was installed before this,

it may be non-condensing.

Find the Data Plate or Manual

Look for your boiler’s data plate (usually on the side or inside the cover) or check your boiler manual.

You can also input the make and model into the PCDB database to confirm the type.

If you think you may have a non-condensing boiler, you could qualify for a free upgrade through a Government-backed scheme like ECO4.
